Germany - Sofia Flights

The German low-cost airline, Germanwings, recently announced that it will be further expanding its flights to Bulgaria. The company currently has scheduled flights from Berlin, Cologne-Bonn, Dresden, Leipzig, and Munich to Sofia but will be extending their service from Hamburg also. This new Sofia-Hamburg route will operate every Tuesday and Thursday and will commence for the 2009 winter schedule.

Restaurant Review

"Hunters" is the first (and currently the only!) completely non smoking bar & restaurant in Borovets. It has proved to be popular with international tourists for that reason. It is also popular for their reasonable prices, good service, tasty traditional food, and very friendly staff. It is run by a Bulgarian family who live there all year round. It has a cosy wooden interior with a log fire in the centre of the room. Some of their meat dishes are barbequed in front of you on the log fire.

Chamkoria Chalets - Construction Update

Winter is finally over and the spring is very much welcomed by the team in Chamkoria Chalets. It has been a long winter and ski season here which has meant that construction work was really only able to restart in early April.

Currently the builders are focusing on completing the installation of the thermal insulation. This work has already been finished on the apartment building and they are now finishing this on the last few chalets. Another area of focus at the moment is the first phase plumbing and electrics. This has already been completed in all the chalets and also on most floors of the apartment building. This week the plastering will commence and this work will continue for several weeks.

Smoking Ban In Bulgaria

The smoking ban could be put in place in Bulgaria as early as next year. At the beginning of April Bulgarian MPs approved a smoking ban which would take effect on 1st June 2010. The ban would prevent smoking in the workplace, outdoor and indoor public places. It is expected that the government will discuss this bill before November.

Smoking is very popular in Bulgaria and almost 50% of people smoke. There is no health strategy or initiatives in place to curtail smoking unlike other European countries. Bulgaria’s tourist industry is opposed to these proposed changes and would prefer a more balanced approach. They believe this ban would have a large impact on the bar and restaurant industry especially for smaller businesses.

Easter in Bulgaria

The Easter celebrations for the Bulgarian Orthodox Church took place this year from 16th to 20th April. Easter is one of the most important holidays in the Bulgarian calendar.

One of the Bulgarian Easter traditions includes the painting of eggs which starts on Holy Thursday.  These painted eggs are destined for the game of ‘choukane s yaitsa’. People take turns in tapping their eggs against the eggs of others, and the person who ends up with the last unbroken egg is believed to have a year of good luck. Other traditions include the braided sweet bread and the lighting of candles.
