Largest Ice Rink in Eastern Europe

The largest ice rink in Eastern Europe was opened in December on the Ariana Lake in downtown Sofia. This huge ice rink covers 1,400 sq meters and is open 24 hours a day. The entrance fee is only 3 BGN (1.50 Euro) and there are regular DJ parties, skating competitions and charity events at the rink. The winter park will remain open until the end of March 2010.

Bulgaria - Good Value Destination

The travel guide company, Lonely Planet, has ranked Bulgaria as the eighth best-value tourist destination. The other other destinations listed in the top 10 were Iceland, London, Thailand, South Africa, India, Malaysia, Mexico, Kenya and Las Vegas. Bulgaria is the only mainland European country in the best-value ranking.

Welcome to Issue #1 of our newsletters for 2010.

We would like to wish you a Happy and Properous New Year. It will be an exciting year for our clients as the Chamkoria Chalets complex will be opening its doors.

Chamkoria Chalets - Construction Update

The weather is very cold now so we can only continue with certain tasks during these winter months. Nevertheless we are making some progress.

The carpenters were on site earlier this month installing all the mantle pieces for the fireplaces in the apartments and the chalets. They also installed the wooden handrail on the main stairwell in the apartment building.

The electricians have been busy on their third phase of work which is installing the light fittings in both the apartments and chalets.

Work on the kitchen installations continues in the apartment building. The majority of the apartments now have the kitchen carcasses fitted and installation of the cupboard doors will follow shortly.

Bulgaria To Enter Schengen Zone - March 2011

Bulgaria is expected to join the Schengen Zone by March 2011. Under the Schengen agreement, travelling from one country to another within the Schengen area is permitted without border controls.

Currently there are 25 member countries of this passport-free zone and this will grow to 27 countries in 2011 when Bulgaria and Romania join it. Bulgaria was allocated funds to prepare for entering this Schengen Zone and they have spent over 80% of the budget at this stage so the Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov believes they will be ready for next year.

EU Funds For Bulgaria

Bulgaria has managed to win back some trust from Brussels, which has unfrozen more than one billion euros of aid since the new center-right government came into office. The news of these unblocked funds came in November when the European Commission unblocked EUR 82,563 M in EU funding for Bulgaria under the PHARE program.

These funds were suspended last year for the country's failure to adequately tackle corruption. Brussels decision to unblock PHARE aid came after earlier in 2009 it released EUR 115 M of ISPA road funds and EUR 109,6 blocked under the SAPARD agricultural program.
